Opening Keynote: Design of the Past, Present, and Possible
KEYNOTE SESSION VIDEO

We travel 50 years in the past and 500 years into the future to examine the long arc of design. Along the way, we’ll uncover our anxieties about the future, explore frameworks that help us think (and design) beyond vision, and develop a better understanding of what it means to understand.

Understanding the users’ experience with a system may be crucial to a project’s success, but how do you convey this to stakeholders and development partners? In this session, we will discuss how we are building a culture of user-centered decision making by integrating user experience methodologies into the design and development of information retrieval systems at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. We will also discuss how we adapted our approach to meet institutional and budgetary challenges.

With the goal of redesigning our existing services to improve the student research experience, we interviewed 23 graduate students about the barriers, facilitators and “roller coaster” of emotions they experienced while working on a literature review assignment, and then used the thematic analysis of those interviews to create a student experience map to inform our service design choices and show students when and how they can utilize library support for their research projects.

We'll explore principles, tools, and objectives in building onboarding programs for (1) user experience as a collaborative service for current and new colleagues, and (2) for students as UX researchers on our team. For colleagues, an onboarding/orientation provides an opportunity to grow a culture of UX and partnerships. For student interns, we examine what knowledge of UX and libraries is essential to maximize the time available and create a lasting experience.

D16: One person at a big table: how intentional space configuration can impact space usage
Different space configurations support different user behaviors. Shaping your space in a way that considers user needs as well as institutional goals sounds good in theory, but how do you do it in practice? At our library, we created a framework that defined the overarching visions we have for how we see our campus community interacting with the library and attributed specific behaviors that further describe those visions. Then we got testing.

D19-01: Enabling User-Driven Design through Accessible Design Thinking
Making our designs accessible is often something we do after we’ve utilized design thinking to help craft solutions to problems. But what if we could break the ‘do one and then the other’ approach and have both accessibility standards and design thinking work in tandem to develop innovative solutions? Rethinking the iterative approach of design thinking and adding accessibility checks throughout the entire process helps us to achieve truly universal design.

Keynote: Paying Better Attention to the Problem
KEYNOTE SESSION VIDEO AVAILABLE

“The idea is the place to start.” “Fall in Love with the problem.” “Get out of the building.” Our practice knows the foundation of a well-deserved experience begins with understanding the user. But our world is still full of generic software written “for everyone.” The way to fight past our current state is to pay attention to what comes before ideas, and to pay attention to people before they even become a potential user. It's not about generating ideas. It's about understanding the purposes of different people.

In this talk, Indi will outline methods for approaching this problem space with empathy and demonstrate techniques to explore problems and bring creative solutions, taking what can be a touchy-feely topic and breaking it down into something tangible, understandable, and actionable.

Indi's slides and handouts will be accessible in the "Presentation Files" folder in dropbox. You can also find them here:
