D05: A Wild Ride from Start to Finish: Mapping the Graduate Research Experience
With the goal of redesigning our existing services to improve the student research experience, we interviewed 23 graduate students about the barriers, facilitators and “roller coaster” of emotions they experienced while working on a literature review assignment, and then used the thematic analysis of those interviews to create a student experience map to inform our service design choices and show students when and how they can utilize library support for their research projects.

D29: The Way I See It: Using Go-Pro Cameras to Understand Student Wayfinding Obstacles
This interactive presentation will introduce findings from a wayfinding study where ESOL students (English for speakers of other languages) were observed navigating physical and digital library spaces. We will present our multifaceted research strategy which combined think-aloud protocols, cognitive walkthroughs, and task-scenario testing with webscreen capture and video recordings from chest-mounted GoPro cameras. We will discuss our findings and provide an analysis of the social, digital, and spatial obstacles ESOL students encounter in academic libraries.

“The idea is the place to start.” “Fall in Love with the problem.” “Get out of the building.” Our practice knows the foundation of a well-deserved experience begins with understanding the user. But our world is still full of generic software written “for everyone.” The way to fight past our current state is to pay attention to what comes before ideas, and to pay attention to people before they even become a potential user. It's not about generating ideas. It's about understanding the purposes of different people.

In this talk, Indi will outline methods for approaching this problem space with empathy and demonstrate techniques to explore problems and bring creative solutions, taking what can be a touchy-feely topic and breaking it down into something tangible, understandable, and actionable.
